zII is an installation that functions according to the magnetic principles of a computer hard disk. It organizes tiny metal particles that are magnetically sensitive.

In fact these particles are ground computer parts : circuit boards, hard drives, processors, monitor deflectors, et cetera. This granulated hardware sand lays on electromagnetic grids that can trigger sudden transformations in the pattern of the metal particles.

They react to the magnetic stimulations by forming singular and abrupt sculptural transformations. One can gaze in silent amazement at the beautiful patterns that these particles that look like black metal filings, take on.

By rotating small dials, the audience can also manipulate the magnetic fields generated by zgodlocator /version zII. As a result, the granulated computer grid, again and again, form new freakish and constantly changing shapes. Of course, unlike a computer hard disk, zgodlocator/version zII does not concern itself with the long-term storage of text or images. zgodlocator is about dynamic patterns. If it has a memory, it is a very short and fast changing one.

In zgodlocator, magnetism becomes a dynamic container for storing, and also manipulating and processing information in its raw form:matter. One could interpret zgodlocator/version zII as a work that stresses the continuous reprocessing of information that takes place in a computer environment. At the same time it is a subtle installation that couples visuals to sound. A variety of contact microphones and electromagnetic sensors set up in the hardware soils capture the ‘hardware-sounds’. The program encodes the raw audio and converts it into graphic patterns, and this output is instantly visualized in the granular landscape.

Biography

Herwig Weiser, born in Innsbruck/Austria (1969), lives and works in Vienna and Cologne. In works like the single-channel video Entrée (1999) and the elaborate interactive and machine installations, zgodlocator (2000), Death Before Disko (2005), and the project in progress, electrochemical sound-modules / ”liquid computer”, Weiser digs deep into the mechanisms of digital technologies, re-inventing and re-purposing the guts of contemporary digital culture. Weiser studied Architecture at the Technical University Innsbruck, and Art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam, and at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. His works have been shown in exhibitions across Europe, North America, and Asia, including the Museum of Applied Arts Vienna, the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, the 3rd Millenium Arts Museum Beijing, Ars Electronica Linz, Centre Le Fresnoy Tourcoing/France, and at Art Basel Miami. Among his awards of distinction are the Hermann Claasen Award for Photography and Media Art (Cologne, 1999), Jury Award at the Festival of New Film (Split/Croatia, 2000), Transmediale Award (Berlin, 2001), and the Nam June Paik Award (Düsseldorf, 2002).
