Gravicell: Gravity and Resistance (JP)

The spatial expression of “gravicells ” is rendered consistently by the real time calculation of the dynamics. The on-going dynamic movements are composed of the counter powers around gravity. Gravity is not materialized without the reaction force. Our sense of direction in a space,up and down or right and left, indicates the fact that we have physical functions in the gravity-based environment, and without it, our concept of space would not be formed. Thus we live in the world where gravity is inevitable, and everything that exists on the earth represents a form controlled by the dynamics of gravity, not to mention a space, language, physics, and shape of stomach or architecture.

This artwork provides a space with hypothetical dynamics having the opposing forces of gravity and resistance, through special devices and sensors. Walking freely in the site and just step onto225 units of unstable floor that is tight-stretched both lengthwise and crosswise with the opposing forces. All movements and changes made by participating audiences are transformed into the movements of sound, and 4 round screen on geometrical images through the sensors, so that the whole space develops or changes in this interactive installation.Additionally, the position of the exhibition space is simultaneously measured by GPS, and plural linked GPS satellites as part of the work. It is involves some observation points outside the earth. It means that the area of our perception has expanded, and presents a fact that this installation site is moving relative to gravity as well.

Sota Ichikawa: architect He received a MFA in architecture from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1996. He lectured at Tokyo Zokei University from 2001 to 2004 and at Tama Art University from 2001 to 2009. He founded an architectural group “double Negatives Architecture (dNA)” in 1998. DNAs generative architecture project “Corpora” extended as “Corpora in Si(gh)te”at Yamaguchi Center for Artsand Media [YCAM] in 2007. The project was chosen as representing Hungarian pavilion at the11th Venice Architecture Biennale. It’s later shown in Berlin (Germany), Linz (Austria), Tokyo(Japan), Mexico City (Mexico), and Moscow (Russia). Since 2008 “MU: Mercurial Unfolding” a collaboration project with Fujiko Nakaya is in progress.
